IEEE Rail Transit Vehicle Interface Standards Committee

WG9 TRANSIT COMMUNICATIONS INTERFACE PROFILES FOR RAIL TRANSIT APPLICATIONS

Fourth Meeting, Sept 29, 1998

Adtranz, 1501 Lebanon Church Rd. Pittsburgh, PA

Meeting called to order at 10:00 a.m.

1.0 Welcome

Pierre Zuber welcomed the WG9 participants to ADTRANZ.

Rob McHugh introduced himself and introductions continued around the table. A list of attendees is attached (Attachment 1).

2.0 Agenda

The agenda was reviewed and accepted as attached (Attachment 2).

3.0 IEEE–TCIP Co-ordination

Rob McHugh updated the group on the proposed working arrangements between the IEEE–RTVISC WG9 and the Transit Standards Consortium (ITE–TCIP). Rob stressed that the arrangement allows balloting by the Rail Community.

4.0 TCIP Overview and Report

The TCIP effort initiated by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Standards for Intelligent Transit Systems, uses the NEMA hierarchical addressing convention and ASN.1 data types to create data and message object databases. The on-board object sets were of particular interest to the IEEE-RTVISC WG9 since they have rail object set placeholders. The web site for TCIP is www.TCIP.org but will soon be consolidated with the Transit Standards Consortium http://www.tcip.org/tsc/index.html.

5.0 Railway Open System Interconnection Network (ROSIN)

Hubert Kirrmann of ABB Corporate Research gave a presentation on the appropriate use of object-oriented methology. Hubert compared the ROSIN framework with the middleware object-oriented approach such as CORBA or DCOM. The common element between the methologies was the fact that ASN.1 could be mapped into IDL if some restrictions were imposed. Rob will make Hubert’s PowerPoint presentation available on request.

6.0 Related standards & publications (OMG)

John Lewis of Union Switch and Signal gave a presentation on the standardization efforts of the Object Management Group ( OMG ). Tom McGean has formalized a working relationship between OMG and IEEE through the TSC. WG9 will investigate the restrictions required to be placed on ASN.1 to make mapping to IDL simpler. John Lewis agreed to forward the list for distribution (Attachment 3).

7.0 WG9 Standard Project Authorization Request (PAR)

Wording for the PAR title, scope and purpose was reviewed and discussed. The title was agreed as: TRANSIT COMMUNICATIONS INTERFACE PROFILES FOR RAIL APPLICATIONS. Rob reviewed a detailed Scope and Purpose as they will appear in the PAR. (Attachment 4). Rob McHugh will submit the PAR to Tom McGean.

8.0 Entering IEEE WG Data into a Database

Microsoft Access will be the database program ( Office 97 or its predecessors ).

Rob McHugh agreed to obtain input of the WG Chairs for entry of their working groups data elements. WG5 data elements are formally defined and could be directly entered into the database at this time. Peter Zuber will attempt to review data elements pertaining to propulsion.

9.0 ASN.1 Primer

Future joint meetings with the TCIP group will be coordinated with Paula Okunieff. Bancroft Scott of Open Systems Solutions may be presenting another ASN.1 overview.

10.0 Next Meeting

It was proposed that the next meeting be held the week of Nov 16,1998.

Rob will try to dovetail with WG1 or 3 if possible; exact date and location will be posted on http://www.tsd.org/wg9.htm
